Great Puritan Messages

by William Ames
Sanctification is not to be understood here as a separation from ordinary use or consecration to some special use, although this meaning is often present in Scripture, sometimes referring to outward and sometimes to inward or effectual separation. The term is to be understood as that change in a believer in which he has righteousness and indwelling holiness imparted to him.

The Happiness of Drawing near to God
by Thomas Watson
How is it just, that those who are evil should enjoy so much good; and those who are good should endure so much evil? While Asaph was debating the case with himself, at last his faith got above his sense; he considered that the wicked were set in slippery places. This did both resolve his doubt, and compose his spirit.

by Asahel Nettleton
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."   John 1:12-13

The Duties of Parents To Their Children
by Cotton Mather
"For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment..."   Genesis 18:19

The One Thing Necessary
by Thomas Watson
If there be anything excellent, it is salvation; if there be anything necessary, it is working out salvation; if there be any tool to work with, it is holy fear. "Work out your salvation with fear."

The Christian View of Death
by John Flavel
If your sins are blotted out; if Christ has vanquished death in your behalf, so that you have nothing to encounter but bodily pain, and possibly not even that; if death will be to you the forerunner of heaven, why should you be afraid?

by Thomas Boston
Then He shall say unto those on the left hand, "Depart from me, you cursed ones, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels!" Matthew 25:41

A Father's Resolutions
by Cotton Mather
I will now actually give them up by faith to God; entreating that each child may be a child of God the Father, a subject of God the Son, a temple of God the Spirit-and be rescued from the condition of a child of wrath, and be possessed and employed by the Lord as an everlasting instrument of His glory.

A Godly Man is a Lover of the Word
by Thomas Watson
The Word is our Magna Carta for heaven; we should be daily reading over this charter. The Word shows what is truth and what is error. It is the field where the pearl of price is hidden. How we should dig for this pearl! A godly man's heart is the library to hold the Word of God; it dwells richly in him (Col. 3:16).
