"My words are Spirit and Life, and not to be weighed by the understanding of man. They are not to be drawn forth for vain approbation, but to be heard in silence, and to be received with all humility and great affection."

The Holy Bible

Like the web sites I have recommended, I am careful to recommend books to those visiting The Old Time Gospel, those who are of "like precious faith".   John said to, "...try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."   1 John 4:1

There are few solid christian books that truely adhere to the scripture and that deserve the attention of the child of God. Today "christian bookstores" are lined with how-to-do/be books, as if the Bible were insufficient to instruct the soul in holiness and right relation with the Almighty. Peter said that, "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him..." (2 Peter 1:3-4)  It was all in the Torah, everything a man needed to draw near to God in that day. Today, we have the complete mind of God toward man in the Bible. The Word, which is the knowledge of God, "changeth not," therefore the need for how-to books is at best misleading.

There are however, a few writings that truely breathe of holiness, I highly recommend reading these listed below. The Old Time Gospel does not necessarily endorse or defend the theological/doctrinal views promoted in these books, however, they are excellent sources for researching the Bible. The Bible being the final authority to the Christian. May these books bless you as they have blessed me.

The Imitation of Christ

The Imitation of Christ   By Thomas á Kempis
In my opinion, this little book is quite possibly the greatest book ever written by man outside of the scripture itself. There is a deep sense of holiness and righteousness throughout the pages, truely inspired and truely an imitation of Christ.
More on Thomas à Kempis

The Release of the Spirit

The Release of the Spirit   By Watchman Nee
For a book to be truely inspired, it must move the soul to a deeper, holier walk with God. Watchman Nee's book about releasing the Spirit is just such a book. Every page challenges the christian to yield to the Spirit of God for a fuller life in Christ.

Pilgrims Progress

Pilgrims Progress   By John Bunyan
A classic allegory by John Bunyan. An inspiring journey for every "christian" to ovecome the pull of the world, the flesh and the devil. Challenging as well as entertaining.

A simple monk living day to day in the presence of God. Brother Lawrence writes of the simplicity of a constant fellowship with the creator God and of the peace that follows those who would walk daily in His presence.
Wholly for God Wholly For God   By Andrew Murry
One of the greatest christian authors of all time, Andrew Murry had a special gift to pen the deeper things of God. The deeper Christian life was a favorite subject for Murray. Wholly for God will challenge you to give your life "a living sacrifice" for Him alone.
