"My words are Spirit and Life, and not to be weighed by the understanding of man. They are not to be drawn forth for vain approbation, but to be heard in silence, and to be received with all humility and great affection."

Messages for Men

There is a great need today for men to, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."  2 Timothy 2:15. Too many men are quick to speak, but slow to hear. James said, "let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:"   James 1:19. These men "have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge."   Romans 10:2.

It is high time men study at the feet of Jesus again like true disciples, and learn from men who have walked with the Lord in holiness, then perhaps we will have something to say to a lost world. Below is a list of great messages by proven men of God.

Family Worship     By Author W. Pink
The advantages and blessings of family worship are incalculable. First, family worship will prevent much sin. It awes the soul, conveys a sense of God's majesty and authority, sets solemn truths before the mind, brings down benefits from God on the home. Personal piety in the home is a most influential means, under God, of conveying piety on the little ones.

The Spirit Committed to God     By Robert Murray M'Cheyne
The very soul which he had made an offering for sin, he committed into the hand of God. There is something very precious in being allowed to use the same expression as Christ. There is something very pleasant in being allowed to use the words of a departed friend, and that a beloved friend. There is no friend like Christ.

Marks of Saintliness     By Elmer E. Shelhamer
Elmer Ellsworth Shelhamer (1869-1940) was an American, an evangelist with the Free Methodists in the latter 19th and early 20th centuries. He wrote many practical and forceful tracts and pamphlets and also a few books. Here is a small portion taken from his outstanding little book "Guide To Beginners."

Why God Used D. L. Moody     By R. A. Torrey
I hope to make it clear that the God who used D. L. Moody in his day is just as ready to use you and me, in this day, if we, on our part, do what D. L. Moody did, which was what made it possible for God to so abundantly use him.

The Man God Uses     By Samuel Logan Brengle
People are crying to God to use them, but He cannot. They are not given up to Him; they are not humble and teachable and holy. It is only those who are "sanctified, and meet for the Master's use, and prepared unto every good work" that He can bless with great usefulness.

The Powers That Shape Us     By A. W. Tozer
The new birth does not produce the finished product. The one hope for him is that he can later choose which forces shall shape him, and by the exercise of his own power of choice he can place himself in the right hands. In that sense he shapes himself and is responsible at last for the outcome.

Are You Fighting?     By J. C. Ryle
"It is a curious fact that there is no subject about which most people feel such deep interest as 'fighting.' Young men and maidens, old men and little children, high and low, rich and poor, learned and unlearned, all feel a deep interest in wars, battles, and fighting."

Unto The First Three     By T. Austin-Sparks
Why have we the record of these men and their feats of strength? Do you think it is just to include in the Bible some thrilling stories that certain men did? If the Bible is written really on the basis of spiritual principles and not just to record human stories, there is something which is spiritual behind everything.

The Right Manner of Worship and Drawing Nigh Unto God     By Jeremiah Burroughs
"Then Moses said unto Aaron, It is what the Lord spake saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh Me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace"   Leviticus 10:3

Walk in the Spirit     By A. B. Simpson
To walk in the Spirit is to recognize the Spirit as present and abiding in us. How often, after we have asked His presence, we treat Him as if He had deceived us, and cry to Him as if He were afar off! Let us recognize Him as having come, and address Him as a present and indwelling friend.

When is Prayer heard?     By Christopher Love
God does not accept the person for the prayer's sake, but the prayer for the person's sake. We read in Genesis 4:4: "God had respect unto Abel, and unto his offering." It was first to Abel and then his sacrifice. God accepted his service because his person was in a state of favor with Him.

The Nature and Necessity of a Public Profession of Religion     By Charles Hodge
If religion is a secret thing, why may it not be kept a secret? To this question the answer is simple and decisive. The confession of Christ before men is declared in Scripture to be essential to salvation. "Whosoever," said our Savior, "shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

Death Is Loss... But, Oh, What Gain!     By C. H. Spurgeon
Oh how blest! The company of poor, imperfect saints on earth is good; but how much better the society of the redeemed! Death is no loss to us by way of friends. We leave a few, a little band below, and say to them, "Fear not little flock," and we ascend and meet the armies of the living God, the hosts of his redeemed. "To die is gain."

Under the Sun     By Billy Sunday
"What profit hath a man of all his labor which he taketh under the sun?"   Ecclesiastes 1:3. This sermon is probably one of the best that Billy Sunday ever preached.

A Right to the Tree of Life     By Robert Murray M'Cheyne
"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."   Revelation 22:14

Are You Born Again?     By J. C. Ryle
It is not enough to reply, "I belong to the church; I suppose I'm a Christian." Thousands of nominal Christians show none of the signs of being born again which the Scriptures have given us many listed in the First Epistle of John.

I Will Pour Water     By Robert Murray M'Cheyne
"For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my Spirit upon thy Seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: and they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses."   Isaiah 44:3-4

A Pattern For Prayer     By Alexander MacLaren
"Bow down shine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy. Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee. Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily."   Psalm 86:1-3

Where are your Sins?     By John C. Ryle
I ask you this day to look this question in the face. A time draws nigh when the question must be answered. The hour cometh when all other questions shall seem like a drop of water in comparison with this. We shall not say, "Where is my money?"-or, "Where is my property?" Our only thought will be, "My sins! Where are my sins?"

The First Fruits of the Spirit     By John Wesley
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."   Romans 8:1

Called with an Holy Calling     By Robert Murray M'Cheyne
"Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began."   2 Timothy 1:9

The Gospel Under Assault     By William Webster
When the biblical gospel is preached it becomes 'the power of God for salvation.' The importance, then, of a correct gospel message can hardly be overstated.
