Great Christian Works

We are more than conquerors
through him that loved us.

Romans 8:37

"The enemy is behind us.
The enemy is in front of us.
The enemy is to the right
and the left of us.
They can't get away this time!"

General Douglas McArthur

"My words are Spirit and Life, and not to be weighed by the understanding of man. They are not to be drawn forth for vain approbation, but to be heard in silence, and to be received with all humility and great affection."
Thomas à Kempis

Men's Ministry

"Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide. Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart."   Psalms 26:1-2

The Spiritual Man
It was about four years ago that I felt called to write such a book. I felt the urgent need for a book based on the Word and on experience, which would give God's children a clear understanding of spiritual life in order that the Holy Spirit might use it in leading the saints onward and in delivering them from groping in darkness.

"As A Man Thinketh"   by James Allen
By virtue of the thoughts which they choose and encourage; that mind is the master weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance, and that, as they may have hitherto woven in ignorance and pain they may now weave in enlightenment and happiness.

The Fountain of Life
The Fountain of Life opened up: or, a display of Christ in his essential and mediatorial glory. A must read by John Flavel, 1671

The Government of the Tongue   by Richard Allestree
"Death and Life are in the power of the Tongue." (Prov. 18:21) They become records in God's Court, are laid up in his Archives as witnesses either for, or against us: for he who is truth itself hath told us, that "By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." Mat. 12:37.

Helps to Intercession   by Andrew Murray
"Pray Without Ceasing." - How can I learn it? The best way of learning to do a thing - in fact the only way - is to do it. Begin by setting apart some time every day, say ten or fifteen minutes, in which you say to God and to yourself, that you come to Him now as an intercessor for others.

Mark Well Your Words
God places great value on words. His Word is forever settled in heaven, but what about our words? Scripture tells us, "For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."   Matthew 12:37

The Commandments of Christ
The commandments of Christ concerning different aspects of our character, our actions, out thoughts and above all our relationship to God.

Rules For Living A Holy Life
These rules for holy living were given to us by Brother William Law. He wrote most of these rules for holy living just before he entered college, when he was about eighteen years of age. I have never seen their equal among the writings of man!

Messages for Men
It is high time men study at the feet of Jesus again like true disciples, and learn from men who have walked with the Lord in holiness, then perhaps we will have something to say to a lost world. Here is a list of great messages by proven men of God.

What Is Man?
"When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man?" How is it possible that the Creator of these, the innumerable armies of heaven and earth, should have any regard to this speck of creation, whose time "passeth away like a shadow?"

Wonderfully Made
The stunning marvel of our Lord's workmanship, "without Him was not anything made that was made" (John 1:3)  perhaps reaches its apex in the human body. "I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 135:14); and when are added the depthless mystery of the soul and of the spirit, we are struck speechless.

Deep Unto Deep
"O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep."   Psalm 92:5   True humility comes out of an awareness of God, the supreme creator and sovereign ruler of all things."O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!"   Romans 11:33

The Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards
Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God's help, I do humbly entreat him by his grace to enable me to keep these Resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to his will, for Christ's sake. Remember to read over these Resolutions once a week.

Quotes by Famous Men
A man can counterfeit love, he can counterfeit faith, he can counterfeit hope and all the other graces, but it is very difficult to counterfeit humility.   D. L. Moody

Family Duty
A Father's Duty to His Family in General   He that is the master of a family, he has, as under that relation, a work to do for God; the right governing of his own family. And his work is twofold. First, Touching the spiritual state of it. Second, Touching the outward state of it. (By John Bunyan)

Pray Without Ceasing
This excellent editorial was written by Nick Gholson, a columnist for the Times Record News in Wichita Falls, Texas, and published in September of 1999. You'll be stirred up over this one!

Food for Thought
Some interesting stories and amazing things to meditate on. Conscience is God's built-in warning system. Be very happy when it hurts you. Be very worried when it does not.

Leadership Principles
Some people complain because God put thorns on Roses, while others praise Him for putting Roses on thorns. Some more thoughts worth thinking about.

Ethical Principles from the Bible
We should resist the temptation to construct a pharisaical list of do's and don't's but rather look for biblical ethical principles to guide our decision making. These can be summed up in the commandments to 'love God with all our heart, soul and mind' and 'to love our neighbour as ourselves' (Matthew 22:37-40).

Of Little Interest...
Odds and ends, some funny, some not, and though none of it is of much interest, it's here for your amusment!

Things Are Not Always What They Seem

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box.

Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible. Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day.

Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart.

He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words?.."PAID IN FULL".

How many times do we miss blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?

Things Are Not Always What They Seem

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion's guest room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, "Things aren't always what they seem."

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very Poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him, he accused. The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die.

"Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied. "When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it." "Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead. Things aren't always what they seem."

Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don't turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You might not know it until some time later...

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."   Romans 8:28

Things Are Not Always What They Seem

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family.

He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could get by. The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career.

When the carpenter finished his work and the builder came to inspect the house, the contractor handed the front-door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," he said, "my gift to you."

What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.

So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing to put up less than the best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized that we would have done it differently.

Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day deserves to be lived graciously and with dignity. The plaque on the wall says, "Life is a do-it-yourself project." Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes and the choices you make today.

Marital Statistics

Most recent numbers indicate that 52 percent of all marriages end in divorce.
•  The divorce rate for FIRST marriages is about 37 percent.
•  The divorce rate for SECOND marriages is about 63 percent.
•  The divorce rate for THIRD marriages is about 78 percent.

Your odds of succeeding are far greater if you stick it out with the one you got.
NOTE:  The divorce rate for couples who "pray together regularly" is ONE out of 152.
